  1. 1912-1947. Swedish businessman who attempted
  2. to rescue several thousand Jews from
  3. German-occupied Budapest in 1944, during
  4. World War II. There he tried to rescue and
  5. support Jews in safe houses, and provided
  6. them with false papers to save them from
  7. deportation to extermination camps. After the
  8. arrival of Soviet troops in Budapest, he
  9. reported to the Russian commander in Jan 1945
  10. and then disappeared. The Soviet government
  11. later claimed that he died of a heart attack
  12. in July 1947. However, rumours persist that
  13. he is still alive and held in a Soviet prison
  14. camp.
